01
The situation

A famous founder, no media channel, and almost no time.

Company
Evergreen.ai, a consumer AI money app from an SEC-registered investment adviser

The company needed top-of-funnel awareness for a new kind of product: AI built for money decisions. Its CEO and founder, a former fintech chief executive, had credibility and a network but no show of his own.

I owned the podcast strategy and its growth strategy. I wrote the format, found the producer and built the launch around his calendar.

The constraint

Each title, clip, pitch and spoken line was an adviser's advertisement. Nothing aired until compliance signed off.

02
My part

What I owned.

I owned
  • The business case and format: biweekly, about 30 minutes, one real household money decision per episode, with a free tool as the call to action
  • Sourcing the producer and negotiating its terms, including a compliance, brand and legal review clause
  • Positioning: the tagline "Money Decisions, Put to the Test," titles, thumbnail direction and hooks
  • The guest strategy, the outreach brief and two ranked candidate pipelines
  • The paid and PR launch: who and what to target, and which sites and shows to cut
  • Two AI booking tools to place the CEO on other shows and stages
03
The calls I made

Five decisions that built the show from zero.

1

Build a show that works without guests

Each episode tests one household's money decision, led by the host. Guests would be specials, not the engine, so a slow booking month could never stall the calendar.

2

Buy the listener, not the reach

I led the paid targeting strategy, so the buy reached the finance and business audiences most likely to listen.

3

Borrow audiences with a two-way swap

Paid feed swaps were off the table for compliance, so the strategy borrowed audiences through show swaps: the CEO guested on an established finance show, and its host recorded episodes for Money Lab in return.

4

Reach guests through more than one channel

Guest outreach ran on several fronts: some asks went from the CEO's own accounts, some came through our network, and others were curated pitches from me and the podcast team.

5

Make compliance part of the format

Compliance was built into each part of the show, from the format and scripts to the disclosures, the guest terms and the review of each clip.

04
The launch plan

Five lanes, pointed at Episode 1.

Owned, paid, PR, borrowed audiences and the CEO as a guest. Paid and PR went live together on launch day, so each lane fed the same episode page.

Trade press on launch day

A Sounds Profitable release on launch day, Podnews and Headliner features the next day, and a Castbox US featured placement within two weeks. I steered pitching toward personal finance shows and away from B2B AI.

Owned

Each episode ends at a tool

A show page, an Episode 1 page with a working calculator, a LinkedIn newsletter issue and one smart link for each app.

Borrowed

The show swap

The CEO's guest episode published four weeks before our launch, and opened a conversation with another finance show.

Guesting

The CEO on other shows

I flagged guest spots on other shows as a major lever from the start, and built the tiered list of target shows.

The guest-booking system

From a scored network to a guest on the record.

I treated booking like a sales pipeline: score widely, screen for risk, reach out through the right channel, and give something back. The same system pitched the CEO out to other shows.

Score

Ranked the CEO's own network

70 people from his LinkedIn network, weighted: audience 35%, a major money decision 25%, fit with the product's modeling 25%, ease of booking 15%.

Screen

Flagged risk before outreach

Each of 74 candidates got a tier, a score and a concern level: 56 low, 13 moderate, 2 high. High meant leadership and compliance review first, for example anyone selling a competing AI product.

Book out

Two AI booking tools

One finds and scores shows, requires 25,000+ verified listeners per episode, and drafts a compliance-checked pitch with two follow-ups. The other scored 24 speaking events. A person approves each send.

Where it was going

From a launch to a growth engine that compounds.

My quarterly roadmap set the show as the top-of-funnel engine: two episodes a month, a seasonal slate from year-end planning to giving, and borrowed audiences in both directions. Here is how I would grow it.

Guest engine

Run booking as a standing pipeline

Keep the scored list live, add a swap to each booking, and put the founder on one outside show for each episode we release. Each guest brings an audience, and each appearance brings one back.

Clips

Turn each episode into a week of content

Clips and soundbites for LinkedIn and short-form video, a carousel, a newsletter issue and a blog post, cleared in one compliance pass. The episode becomes a week of content, and paid promotion follows the clips that already work.

Data-led topics

Let the audience pick the next episode

Choose topics from search demand, survey data and the questions people ask the product, then end each one on a calculator with an email capture. Downloads become subscribers, and subscribers become product users.

The principle

A founder's show is a distribution asset, not a content project. Launch it like a product, with paid and PR together, then let guests, clips and tools compound the audience you paid to start.

For your brand

A founder-led podcast, launched like a product.

  1. 01Write the business case: the funnel role, the format and the tool each episode ends on
  2. 02Choose the producer and write review rights into the contract
  3. 03Build the guest engine: score the founder's network, screen for risk, send personally
  4. 04Set the compliance path once: disclaimers, disclosures and review order
  5. 05Launch with paid and PR together, targeted to the buyer
  6. 06Borrow audiences each month: swaps, guest spots and clips
